Our History

The 7 Chiefs Sportsplex & Chief Jim Starlight Centre is proudly owned and operated by the Tsuut’ina Nation. The Tsuut’ina Nation was formally established in 1877 by the signing of Treaty 7, recognizing a fully independent culture with a long history of progression and innovation.

We welcome Nation and non-Nation members alike to our facilities. Come learn more about the distinguished history of the Tsuut’ina people and discover the rich heritage and culture that has helped us thrive on this land for generations.

Meet The Seven Chiefs

The 7 Chiefs Sportsplex & Chief Jim Starlight Centre is named in honour of the first seven Chiefs who led the Tsuut’ina Nation following the signing of Treaty 7.

Chief Bullhead, who signed Treaty 7 in 1877 and led until his death in 1911.

Chief Big Belly, who led from 1911 to 1920.

Chief Joseph Big Plume, who was the last hereditary Chief to lead the Tsuut’ina Nation from 1920 to 1946.

Chief David Crowchild, the Nation’s first elected Chief, who led from 1946 to 1952.

Chief Jim Starlight, who led the Nation from 1952 to 1966.

Chief Dick Big Plume, who was descended from Chief Bull Head and led the Nation from 1966 to 1970.

For Tsuut’ina, For Everyone

7 Chiefs Sportsplex & Chief Jim Starlight Centre Is For Everyone

While our facility stands on land belonging to the Tsuut’ina Nation, we proudly welcome everyone to enjoy it. Our Tsuut’ina community encourages our non-First Nations neighbours in Calgary and beyond to join us for new and meaningful experiences so that we may grow together into a shared future.

TAZA

The 7 Chiefs Sportsplex & Chief Jim Starlight Centre is a key part of over 50 years of sustained economic development by the Tsuut’ina people – the dream we call ‘TAZA’. TAZA means “Something wondrous is coming!” It is one of the largest First Nation development projects in North America, with a 1,200-acre site filled with a diverse mix of tenants including retail spaces, offices, entertainment venues, restaurants, and vibrant outdoor spaces. Master-planned to embrace Tsuut’ina culture, TAZA is a place to dive deeper and unearth the rich narratives of those who call this land home.
